School is in session: For the summer!

I admit it!  I am getting excited about working on academic centered activities with my boys this summer!  I'm looking forward to a somewhat structured day with room for fun!


I have had a blast this year working at JHW elementary and working with a great kindergarten team [not to mention just a great JHW team in general!].  And now I get to do more of the "fun stuff" this summer.  I guess it's true.  What my mom has told me all along:  teaching is in my blood :) 

I've been working on summer lesson plans to keep us busy for 10 weeks and to continue opening up a wonderful world for my sons.  Listed below is what I have so far.  Not complete and always open for suggestions and input :)

Here we go!


Language Arts:
[Aaron]: Letter recognition [which he's pretty well got down], writing all letters, writing his name with out tracing, proper use of a book, proper terminology, beginning phonics

[David]: Easy reader books, vocabulary, writing, sight words, phonics
Science:
Each theme/unit will last one week: the human body, animal kingdom, ocean life, weather, bugs, earth science, space, physical science, kitchen science.

Social Studies:
Each week we will do a different country, doing various crafts, information learning and cooking a dish from each country.  The countries are: Mexico, Australia, France, America [put over the 4th of July week], United Kingdom [in honor of my mother and sister :)], China, Italy, Austria, Egypt and Iceland.


Math:
[Aaron]: Number recognition to 20.  Patterns, shapes
[David]: Addition, subtraction, patterns, terminology [on top of, under, beside, etc].

Art:
10 different themes ranging from learning about an artist and doing art to support that to specific projects:
Learning about colors/shapes to make pictures/Rainbow colors, Van Gogh, Monet, Leonardo Da Vince, Pottery/ceramics, Picasso, Michelangelo,  sculptures, Art using nature, art & craft time for "new teacher 2012-2013 welcome gift."


Music:
I don't have much here yet.  But I know for 3 weeks I want to concentrate on classical music and some composers and hopefully find a orchestral show to take them too.  Orchestral instruments, drums/drum circles.

Schedule for the day:

8:30-9:10: Math
9:10-9:30: Centers
9:30-10:00: Language Arts
10:00-10:30: Outside play/snack
10:30-11:00: Science
11:00-11:30: Music
11:30-12:00: Social Studies
12:00-1:00: Centers/Free time & Lunch
1:00-2:30: Naptime for Aaron/Quiet reading rest time for David
2:30-3:30-Outside play time
3:30-4:30: Art


And that's what I have so far!  It's going to be a fun summer!  And thank goodness for Pinterest!  So many good ideas too!

I will never forget that day. I was judging!!! I watched the lady as she absently scanned 2 Lunchables, a carton of Capri-Sun, some individual applesauce pouches, a single serving of some soda product, and a pack of mixed nuts. (do you KNOW how expensive and processed those Lunchables are anyway?? Not to mention juice pouches full of sugar.) Come on, wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to make a couple of sandwiches, and have some reusable cups and portion containers to get virtually the same meal?   Her children were a little disheveled and good god I don't think she ever brushes their hair. They were also not under control but arguing back and forth. To be honest it was rather annoying and I thought why doesn't she intervene? But wonder of wonders, they were on electronics.  And of course, she was paying with food stamps.  No mistaking that debit card anywhere. 6.5 years later....I still wonder about you tiny one!

I will never forgot the day when I found out I was pregnant for the very first time.  It was such a rush of emotion.  Fear, happiness, contemplation, all wrapped up into one.  It wasn't the most opportune time, but let's face it when is it really?  At the heart of it all, I was ecstatic.  I was going to be a mother, and Eric a father. Several weeks later I could tell, things were not going well.  One night we found ourselves in the emergency room.  An ultrasound had been ordered.  Eric was made to leave and I was left alone in a sterile room with just the technician and myself.  She barely spoke 2 words to me.  I saw the baby and the screen was then quickly whisked around so I could see no more.  My heart sunk.  The doctor came in and said we see the baby, but no heart beat.  But don't worry.  It's still early! The Anniversaries of Death

It's been 436 days since Eric passed away.  One year and two months.  62 weeks and 1 day.  To be honest, I'm not sure some days how we got this far.  A part of me "knows" but a part of me does not. In those early days and weeks, two pieces of advice became a profound stepping stone on this journey. First, do not make any major decisions during the first year of losing a loved one. The second was "do the next thing".   I remember hearing the first one from the priest at my local Parish.  Trust me, I wanted to take my boys and run away.  To where?  I don't know.  I felt like I wanted to run and run and run.  I wanted to crawl out of my skin.  I wanted to be anywhere but here (then, in that present moment).
